For people with differences, employment can mean independence, greater economic self-sufficiency, an opportunity to use their skills, confidence, and provide more active participation in community life. Work can provide individuals a sense of purpose and self-worth. For many, it defines who we are and is a source of justifiable pride. All individuals, regardless of difference, deserve the opportunity to be full members of their community where they can live, learn, work and play through all stages of life.

Nevertheless, even in 2022, when it comes to finding meaningful and appropriate jobs, people with differences are still heavily disadvantaged. This is mainly because of negative prejudices of employers, which often believe that people with differences are not able to perform as efficiently as those without a difference, or that they are a burden rather than a source of added value.

Here at Different & Able, we are on a mission to change the mindset of those who believe people with differences cannot achieve the same things that others can, counteracting the toxic “cannot do” attitude in the workplace. Through our work, we seek to break barriers that often hinder those with a difference. We know that everyday people with differences can and do make important contributions to America’s businesses.
